April 6th: Mending Workshop hosted by Katherine Ferrier
what
Visible Mending: Patching + Darning with Cal Patch
when
Thursday, April 6 | 6-8pm
details & registration
Visit mending workshop with Cal Patch will show you 2 different ways to patch a hole in woven garments: Overlay and Reverse Appliqué, various stitches that work for each method, and when to use them. Then we will mend a hole in a knitted garment with traditional darning. Whether you try to do it invisibly or artfully, you’ll extend the life of your favorite woolies by knowing how to darn them. Traditional darning works well for smaller holes or areas that are worn thin. You might have so much fun, you'll actually be happy to see a new hole in your most-loved and worn garments!
$45 | No prerequisite skills.

April 7th: Make a Boxy Tee/Tunic hosted by Katherine Ferrier
what
Make a Self-Drafted Boxy Tee/Drapey Tunic with Cal Patch
when
Friday, April 7 | 10am-5pm
details & registration
In this workshop, we’ll begin by drafting the basic pattern to your measurements, then cut + sew a quick muslin (fit sample) to check fit, and tweak the pattern if necessary. Next you’ll either continue by turning your sample into a *wearable muslin*, or cut a new one, perhaps adding extra seams or pockets. Beginner stitchers will keep it fairly simple, and those with more advanced skills can customize to their hearts’ content. Everyone will leave with a garment that reflects their personality and ideas to make endless variations!
Please have at least advanced-beginner sewing skills, with a few simple projects under your belt. You should be comfortable threading and troubleshooting your sewing machine without assistance.
$225 | Advanced-beginner sewing skills.

About this Event
CYCLES
Directed by Zeinabu Irene Davis, USA, 1989, 17 mins
Rasheeda Allen is waiting for her period, a state of anticipation familiar to all women. Drawing on Caribbean folklore, this exuberant experimental drama uses animation and live action to discover a film language unique to African American women. The multilayered soundtrack combines a chorus of women's voices with the music of Africa and the diaspora-including Miriam Makeba, acappella singers from Haiti and trumpetiste Clora Bryant.
"A brilliantly innovative reflection on Black womanhood." -- Michael Wilmington Los Angeles Times
"A beautifully composed and dryly funny meditation." -- L.A. Weekly
"Provocative. An interesting exploration of African American experience as a collective unconscious." --Chris Willman, Los Angeles Times

PERFECT IMAGE?
Directed by Maureen Blackwood, UK, 1989, 30 min
Through a series of photographs, raps and sketches, two actresses offer an empowering look at what it means to be a contemporary black woman.
"When the pain is very deep, sometimes the way to deal with it is to come at it from a different way, which is why comedy works so well; you can handle very difficult and complex subjects by crafting something that has lightness on the top, but then you’ve got the iceberg underneath. Perfect Image? is a good conversation starter. It is ages old now, but we are still dealing with the same issues." --Maureen Blackwood, Director
"[Maureen Blackwood's] work, the 35mm and 16mm films that she made between 1986 and 1994, has been too easily forgotten. Focusing on the rich yet largely untold stories of black British women and encompassing drama, satire, biography and documentary, Blackwood’s powerful films explore the dynamics of fractured black British identities and explore new approaches to the politics of cinematic representation in the African diaspora." --Karen Alexander, British Film Institute
